Week 1 : 3 - 10 April 2015
Difficulty: Level 2
How to get there: return flight to Budapest

The first week of the expedition! We start in Hungary where the entire trail is perfect for bird watching with spectacular bird life! Please see this website for extensive information about Hungarian birds. The area of Lake Batalon plays a significant role for migrating birds like Bean, Greylag and Greater White-fronted Geese, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Goldeneye.

We will start this week at Szabadbattyan with its memorial for Turkish-Hungarian friendship, and from there walk towards Lake Batalon until the town of Szantod. After Szantod we will move away from the Batalon towards Dombovar and Pécs

Pécs is a multicultural city which was the European Capital of Culture in 2010, together with Istanbul and Essen. Several Ottoman artefacts survived the pass of time, namely three mosques, two minarets, a Sufi sanctuary, remnants of a bath over the ancient Christian tombs near the cathedral, and several houses, one even with a stone cannonball embedded in the wall.

After Pécs we will pass through the lively Mohács which is known for its Battle of 1526, Sátorhely with its museum of the Battle of Mohács, and Udvar, the border town with Croatia.

Note again that this entire area is great for bird watching!
